Art School at the Center is new this year! Open to anyone interested in study of art, from around the tristate, our classes start with beginning drawing, painting & printmaking all the way through to their senior year in High School and to adulthood. Classes at VIVA are small and sequential so that each student's knowledge will be built upon as they move through classes.  What makes the Center's VIVA Art School unique is the focus on drawing as the pivotal foundation to all other creative and artistic endeavors.  To learn to look closely at the world around you, to learn to see it in new way and to translate that into a two- dimensional drawing is a powerful tool that can be utilized throughout life.  Whether student continues on creative artistic path as a professional artist, careful looking and observing is an important skill translated into any path in life, not just the creative artistic path.  Doctors, for example, need to possess keen observation skills while diagnosing patients, as do pilots when flying, teachers, attorneys...  Effects of art education on all aspects of life are thus omnipresent and crucial.

Offering a strong foundation programs in visual arts, VIVA students can further broaden their abilities in Photography, Ceramics, Computer Graphic Design, Bookbinding, Portfolio Development and more. VIVA instructors meet students at their skill level, build on past experiences, and challenge them creatively while developing critical thinking skills, all within a safe, energizing and supporting environment.

ART SCHOOL CURRICULUM

Fall: Drawing / Winter: Printmaking / Spring: Painting

This course is part of a yearlong curriculum that focuses on drawing in the first quarter, printmaking in the second quarter, and painting in the third quarter. Drawing is the core of our foundation program for a number of reasons: it perfects fine motor skills in the younger student, discipline in all ages, and teaches students to see objects and the world around them in ways they never have before, and is key in perfecting the ability to draw realistically. Whether possessing artistic talent or not, any student ready to learn to draw will have no trouble acquiring the skills and knowledge to do so under the guidance of our competent instructors.  Each level builds on the knowledge and skill acquired from the previous level.  In every class Art vocabulary, history, criticism and aesthetics will be incorporated, as will the all-important Elements and Principals of Design.  Come prepared to be astounded at what you will be capable of by the end of each quarter! It is highly recommended that all student take yearlong instruction: just as in music and dance, our curriculum offers the possibility of life-long learning and competence in the studio arts.

The winter quarter is focused on printmaking. What exactly is printmaking? Printmaking is the process of transferring an image from one surface (a metal, plastic, glass, stone plate), to another surface: paper, cloth, walls, ceramics...whatever you like! Each method challenges students to continue to develop drawing skills while learning design and compositional principals.

Please note that some materials are required.  These materials are separate, and are not included in the cost of the class.
