WINTER QUARTER DATES:

January 9 - April 1, 2012

No class: week of January 16 and February 20

Open to anyone in the tristate interested in study of art, our classes start with beginning drawing, painting & printmaking all the way through to their senior year in High School and to adulthood. Art classes at the Wyoming Fine Arts Center are small and sequential so that each student's knowledge will be built upon as they move through classes.

Offering a strong foundation programs in visual arts, Fine Arts Center's students can further broaden their abilities in Photography, Ceramics, Computer Graphic Design, Bookbinding, Portfolio Development and more. Our instructors meet students at their skill level, build on past experiences, and challenge them creatively while developing critical thinking skills, all within a safe, energizing and supporting environment.

What makes the Center's Art School unique is the focus on drawing as the pivotal foundation to all other creative and artistic endeavors.  To learn to look closely at the world around you, to learn to see it in new way and to translate that into a two- dimensional drawing is a powerful tool that can be utilized throughout life.  Whether student continues on creative artistic path as a professional artist, careful looking and observing is an important skill translated into any path in life, not just the creative artistic path.  Doctors, for example, need to possess keen observation skills while diagnosing patients, as do pilots when flying, teachers, attorneys...  Effects of art education on all aspects of life are thus omnipresent and crucial.

Mondays OR Tuesdays 3:45 - 5:00pm

This course is the beginning of a yearlong curriculum that focuses on drawing in the first quarter and then builds to include printmaking, painting and sculpture in Winter and Spring quarters. Core Art classes are structured like an artist’s studio: a place for students to explore materials, processes and ideas through the guidance of the teacher. During the fall quarter, drawing skills are the focus of the curriculum. Drawing is the foundation of the art program for a number of reasons: it perfects fine motor skills in the younger student, discipline in all ages, and teaches students to see objects and the world around them in ways they never have before. Students are active participants in their learning, choosing projects, materials and ideas to suit their particular skill level and experience. If you have been through the art studio before, come back, there is much more to be learned and experienced! Veteran students will find new projects and challenges awaiting them.

The focus is placed on developing imagination, character development, and storytelling through sequential art: creating dynamic illustrations for graphic novels. Illustration is the key to attract the eye and activate imagination. In this class, free-standing images will be created as well as sequential art. The principles of background, middle ground and foreground, extreme perspective and dynamic character design are but a few lessons that will be taught and regularly practiced. So rev up your imagination, and "pencils at the ready" for an explosive series of illustrations for graphic novels.
