Midwest Modern Music School

The Midwest Modern Music School has quickly become one of the country's leading schools for community and pre-collegiate based Digital Music Production and Performance. Directed by Tom Haines, nationally pre-eminent instructor in the digital arts and a certified Apple production suite trainer, students of all backgrounds become prepared for real world musical applications where digital skills are now a prerequisite. The MMMS uses our state-of-the-art Music Technology Lab to offer extraordinary classes for children and adults to explore the world of digital recording, songwriting, arranging, composition, rock and jazz performance, and Apple computer applications. The Lab provides each student with their own station with an Apple iMac computer, full digital keyboard, electric guitar or bass, and a host of leading music production software.

DIGITAL MUSIC PRODUCTION

This exceptional curriculum is designed to be taken in pairs: Songwriting/Recording and Arranging/Compostition, over the course of the entire year for a total immersion in digital music production. However, classes can be taken individually for a customized experience - see packages below. All classes take place in our state-of-the-art Music Technology Lab where each student has their own station with an iMac computer, digital keyboard, and a host of industry-leading software.

DIGITAL PERFORMANCE STUDIES

All beginning through advanced rock and jazz musicians are welcome in these exciting ensembles and lessons! Leave each session with a CD of music created by your band and receive at least two performance opportunities per 8 week session. Great class for groups of friends to take together! Grouped by age and ability.

STUDIO BAND

Instructors: Matt Frechtling, Tony Neumyar, and Andrea Lee

Studio Band brings together the pieces of a modern rock band (guitar, bass guitar, drums, vocals, keyboard, electric strings, etc.) to explore the excitement of working as a group. This ensemble focuses on performance techniques with students learning cover tunes and creating an original tune under the direction of the instructor. Students will be placed in bands based on experience. Pre-formed groups are welcomed.(Inquire about our pre-formed band discount!)

Performance opportunities available with "Bands at the Center" Concert nights.
Concerts are scheduled for Dec. 18, 2009, 7-9pm and May 28, 2010, 7-9pm.

Grouped by age and ability.

LOGIC STUDIO


Logic Studio is an intensive course on the cutting edge on music technology. Join Tom Haines, professor of audio engineering at CCM, and a certified Logic Pro trainer, as you explore the vast possibilities that Logic Pro 8 provides. It is recommended that students have some experience with computer music technology, such as Apple's GarageBand, though such experience is not required. A course book in included in the price of tuition.

SONGWRITING


Songwriting 1 (Session II) covers the three basic areas of every song - lyrics, melody and harmony. Participants will present their work in-class creating a "writers workshop" setting. Two songs will be assigned and developed during this course.

Songwriting 2 (Session TBA) is an intermediate course that takes an in-depth look at song structure. Nine song structure devices will be explored and two songs will be assigned and developed during this course.

RECORDING


Recording 1 (Session TBA) focuses on the basics of recording music for real world and home studio applications. Topics will include microphone use, monitoring, signal flow, studio setup and recording software basics. No prior recording experience required.

Recording 2 (Session TBA) topics include basic theory and use of effects, monitoring, signal flow and mixing techniques using Apple industry standard software GarageBand and LOGIC™

ARRANGING


Arranging 1 (TBA) focuses on the basics of arranging pop/rock/country/dance music through vocal, chordal and rhythm section arranging. Each area will be explored using Apple industry standard software GarageBand and Propellerhead's Reason. Arranging 2 (TBA) is an intermediate class focusing on the blending of structural musical development and digital technology. Each participant will have lab access during regular business hours to hone the skills learned during these courses.

COMPOSITION


Composition 1 (TBA) is designed to introduce musicians to the craft of notational music composition. Topics include theme writing and development and basic musical structural elements using Sibelius notation software. Two compositions will be assigned and developed during this eight week course. No prior composing experience required. Composition 2 (TBA) is an intermediate course exploring six compositional devices through an in-depth look at compositional structures using Sibelius notation software. Each participant will have lab access during regular business hours to hone the skills learned during these courses.

DIGITAL MUSIC COMPOSITION STUDIO


Designed to introduce young musicians to the foundations of writing music, this course explores musical structures, creating melodies, subjects and counter subjects and basic notation techniques as Sibelius software is introduced as a writing tool. Intermediate classical music musicianship, basic sight reading skills and computer abilities are encouraged. No prior composing experience required. Each participant will have access to the lab during regular business hours to hone the skills learned during the course.

DIGITAL MUSIC RECORDING STUDIO


This course is designed to introduce young musicians to the joy of creating music with a computer. The course explores musical song structure, using and creating music loops, creating rhythm beds and recording yourself along with the music tracks you create utilizing Apple industry standard software GarageBand and other shareware recording programs. Basic musical instrument and computer abilities are encouraged. No prior recording experience required. Each participant will have access to the lab during regular business hours to hone the skills learned during the course.

ADVANCED DIGITAL RECORDING/COMPOSITION STUDIO

Prerequisite: Digital Recording Studio or Digital Music Composition Studio

This advanced course is designed as a continuation for students who have completed either of our introductory Digital Studio classes. Here, students develop larger-scale projects, and are offered the opportunity to collaborate with each other, as well as other artists. Drawing inspiration from art created by students in our own Art Workshop, or perfecting a string orchestra piece to be played by our Chamber Orchestra are just a couple of examples of opportunities available to students enrolled in this class.

    MUSIC THEORY and EAR TRAINING Faculty Recommended


    Move at your own pace through Music Theory instruction incorporating Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory graded curriculum. Guided instruction includes regular reviews and tests that help the student gauge their understanding of musical concepts. This low-pressure environment is the perfect place to learn the basics of how music works, or to refine your understanding of music theory even further. Develop ear training skills through dictation, study of songs, and basic rhythmic patterns using graded Aurelia exercises that give instant feedback and make ear training easy and fun.

    *Special 10% discount if you are also enrolled in any private lessons or additional MMMS classes.

    We are excited to announce a new location for the LOGIC Usergroups meeting hosted by ICB Audio and Video. The meeting is moving to The Center For The Arts, Wyoming, a community located one mile from the I-75 and Galbraith road exits.

    Tom Haines from UC-CCM will moderate the new LOGIC Usergroup meetings in The Center For The Arts new electronic Music Technology Lab-a state of the art computerized facility. This is a rare opportunity to meet with a composer/musician and LOGIC user of the highest caliber, as well as network and work with other LOGIC users.

    LOGIC Usergroups offer an informal and casual opportunity to meet other LOGIC users and exchange tips, ideas, information and answer one another's questions. User group meetings are free and open to the public. Whether you're a long-time user or new to LOGIC , take advantage of this networking opportunity!

    The Center For The Arts, Wyoming is located on the corners of Wyoming and Grove Avenues in the Cincinnati suburb of Wyoming one mile from I-75 and Galbraith Road exit.
