Nancy Kopp
"Working at the Center for the Arts is a real privilege" says Nancy. " It is a place where my students can paint while listening to a live orchestra rehearsal upstairs, where the very latest technology is available for digital photography, and where people of all ages and interests come together every week to express themselves creatively. Whether it be dance, music or art, the Center is the place to be!" Nancy was born and raised in Warren, Ohio and graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education. She is certified to teach grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade and enjoys teaching all ages right up to adults. After college, Nancy taught in the Perrysburg Public Schools for 3 years at elementary and high school levels, seeing as many as 800 students per week in 3 different buildings! During this time, Nancy also taught Adult Continuing education classes in art and established an art room for seminary students at Divine Word Seminary School where she also taught part time for 2 years. Once in Cincinnati, she was employed as a substitute teacher in the public schools for a short period of time. She took a break from teaching to raise her new daughter Amanda. During that time Nancy worked as in advertising in sales and production of radio commercial jingles and television commercials. She learned a lot about advertising but missed teaching. Nancy began the Art Workshop 24 years ago in her home on Vermont Avenue shortly after she moved to Wyoming. Her first class was 7 students made up of mostly neighbors and Amanda’s friends. Once word got out about Nancy's art classes, it didn't take longfor people to start calling Nancy to ask about other classes that might be available. There seemed to be a huge need for children’s art classes and at the time, the only other places to go for lessons were not local. At the Workshop, kids could walk from school for their weekly class or be driven there within 5 minutes from anywhere in Wyoming. This soon became a popular place! So popular that there were 50 students a week coming for classes, making a location change necessary! Paul Bartel had just purchased the Masonic Building at 322 Wyoming Avenue and Nancy heard that it was being turned into a Fine Arts Center. Adding an Art Room to the facility seemed like a natural thing to do and since Paul’s son, Jason had been a student at the Workshop, she knew that Paul was interested in all of the fine arts. Nancy added adult art classes and home school classes 12 years ago when the Workshop moved into the then Wyoming Fine Arts Center. The Workshop took over one half of the lower level of the building turning it into an artist’s studio, complete with ceramic area and kiln, a wide variety of materials and art library. The Workshop now sees approximately 100 budding art students of all ages every week, and at least 200 different students in the summer through Workshop Summer Camps. This convenient location in the center of Wyoming is still a big draw for the Workshop. Living in Wyoming now for 25 years, Nancy resides on a quiet and charming street with her son Paul, who is a junior at the University of Cincinnati. Her other roommates are Elle, a sweetheart of a yellow Labrador retriever, and Raina, the tiger striped cat. Nancy's daughter, Amanda, graduated from Wyoming High School in 1995, and the University of Cincinnati in 1999, and has recently moved back to Wyoming with her husband, Kevin Sheehan, and new baby Zoe. |
