MIDWEST MODERN MUSIC SCHOOL DAY CAMPS

SCHOOL OF ROCK CAMP

A regional first! Offers students an ideal opportunity to immerse themselves in performance and ensemble techniques in our state-of-the-art Music Technology Lab.

Students will be placed in a band of similar musical interest, age, and ability. Pre-formed groups are also welcome. Our unique curriculum develops songwriting and digital recording skills using cutting-edge software and equipment under the direction of master instructors. Students also develop artistic marketing skills. Daily activities include master classes, ensemble and vocal coachings, guest talks, songwriting, recording, rehearsals, and instrumental technique classes. Students produce and take home their own CD. They also perform in an All Camp Jam Concert on the final evening. Students should have at least 6 months of study on their instrument.

ROCK 'N ROLL EXPLORATIONS CAMP

Rock instruments, vocals, songwriting, recordings, costumes, and CD design! An action packed week for the budding "rocker." Choose an instrument to focus on: guitar, bass, keyboard, or drums- no previous experience necessary. Led by professional teachers in a friendly atmosphere, students play in a band, learn and write songs in the state of the art Music Tech Lab, and create a Rock "image" in the Art Workshop. Instruments provided with a Jam Sampler Concert on the final day.

MIDWEST MODERN MUSIC SCHOOL CLASSES

JAZZ ENSEMBLES CLASS

These “hip” classes will start off with jazz basics and build up from there. Develop the improvisation skills that are important for both the classical and rock musician. Students choose between keyboard, guitar, and bass and begin to develop jazz chord voicing, harmonization techniques, and basic jazz instrumental techniques. Students should have at least 1 year of instruction on their instrument and should be proficient in basic note reading.

JAZZ COMBO CLASS

Instruction in small group jazz performance for guitar, keyboard, strings, bass, or drums. No prior jazz experience necessary! Emphasis is on the development of the ear through improvisation, the practical application of chords and scales, and the principles of successful small group playing. Repertoire includes basic blues forms and jazz standards from legends Myles Davis, John Coltrane, and more. Students receive class instruction as well as individual attention within a combo format.

SONGWRITING AND COMPOSITION

Using the highly acclaimed GarageBand® and Sibelius® software, bring your musical vision to your band, classical ensemble, website, ipod, or just entertain your family and friends. Also designed to introduce students to the basics of editing, looping, and MIDI editing.

DIGITAL RECORDING

This is an introductory class focusing on the basics of recording music for real world and home studio applications. Utilizing industry leading LOGIC® software, topics will include microphone use, monitoring, headphones, signal flow, studio setup and basic mixing. A portion of the class will involve hands-on experience recording The Center For The Arts concerts. No prior recording experience required.

SUMMER STRING FLING

Coordinated by Tom Guth

Exciting new themes like Movie Music, American and Latin Styles, and "Pop" Rock define the musical repertoire for this year's Summer String Fling Camps. Also work together in the new Music Technology `Lab to compose an original orchestral piece for the Friday Finale Performance. Each day will include orchestra, composition, chamber music, and sectionals, with advanced students placed in leadership roles and all students enjoying a challenging and varied repertoire. Professional instructors are faculty of the Cincinnati String Academy, area teachers, and guests. The week will conclude with a Friday Finale Performance beginning the last hour of the camp. Your child must have completed at least one school year of formal orchestral or private lesson instruction to participate in this camp.
*Special Offer: Each week will have different repertoire. Campers will receive a 20% discount on each additional String Fling week they sign-up for Elementary String Fling.

CHAMBER MUSIC HIGH SCHOOL

A perfect complement to our Jr. /Sr. High String Fling camp, Chamber Music Camp assigns students to their very own trio, quartet, or quintet for an introduction to this exhilarating musical style. Students must have completed at least two school years of formal orchestral or private lesson instruction to participate in this camp. Friday Finale Performance at 11:00am.

COMPOSITION CAMP

Also complementing our Jr./Sr. High String Fling camp, Composition Camp uses the highly acclaimed Sibelius® software to bring students’ musical visions to their classical ensemble, website, or just to entertain your family and friends. Students in this camp will also compose an original orchestral composition that the High School String Fling will perform and record!

CHAMBER MUSIC CAMP

Master Classes with CCM’s Kurt Sassmannshaus, CSO’s Eric Bates and Norman Johns

An exciting and intensive week dedicated to the art of chamber music. String students will enjoy performing in a trio, quartet, or quintet coached by some of the best professional chamber musicians in Cincinnati. String students must be proficient in at least shifting, vibrato, and basic spiccato. Audition requirements: two solo pieces of your choice and a scale.
